According to ancient Tamil records, the sanctum idol was consecrated by the legendary Siddhar Bogar around 3000 BCE. Crafted from Navapashanam—a rare alchemy of nine toxic herbs and minerals purified through secret esoteric processes—the deity possesses legendary healing properties.

The temple shares a direct spiritual connection with the renowned Palani Murugan Hill Temple. Historical traditions hold that Bogar sculpted the Poombarai idol prior to creating the main deity shrine at Palani, establishing Poombarai as a vital pilgrimage point.
